The Things You Can’t Help But Think
Being pregnant made me a bit of an emotional mess (my husband might say ‘bit’ is not quite a strong enough word…). After we found out about our baby’s club foot and cleft lip I couldn’t help but think it was my fault. I was the baby ‘baker’, I had one job so far and I was doing it wrong. Luckily, I have a wonderful and supportive husband who without a doubt said it wasn’t my fault. He would explain that I had done everything right during this pregnancy. I was eating right, exercising almost daily, taking vitamins and had stopped drinking alcohol and caffeine. Knowing that (or at least being told that) helped.
It took me a long time to realize that there really was nothing I could have done differently, but as I said, hormonal mess. For those of you who may be going through something similar, know it’s not your fault. Very rarely would a mom knowingly do something to harm their growing babies. So please don’t blame yourself and remember your husband/partner is probably going through a very rough time also. Try to keep in mind what they might be feeling. Maybe even ask them. I know, sounds crazy, but they might need some support too. Talk, cry and love.
